Bitcoin (symbol: ₿, code: BTC or XBT) is an international cryptocurrency and currency payment system created in 2009 by an anonymous inventor (or group of inventors), known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, who developed an idea he presented on the Internet in late 2008.
By convention if the term Bitcoin is used with a capital initial it refers to the technology and the network, while if lowercase (bitcoin) it refers to the currency itself.
By financial experts, Bitcoin is not classified as a currency, but as a currently highly volatile store of value. Unlike most traditional currencies, Bitcoin does not make use of a central entity or sophisticated financial mechanisms, the value is determined solely by supply and demand leverage: it uses a database distributed among network nodes that keep track of transactions, but uses cryptography to manage functional aspects, such as the generation of new currency and the attribution of bitcoin ownership.
The bitcoin network allows for pseudo-anonymous ownership and transfer of coins; the data needed to use one’s bitcoins can be stored on one or more personal computers or electronic devices such as smartphones, in the form of a digital “wallet,” or maintained with third parties that perform bank-like functions. The bitcoin wallet has an address identified by an alphanumeric code that has between 25 and 36 characters between numbers and letters; it is the only data to be communicated to receive a payment that will enjoy a certain degree of anonymity, but will at the same time be publicly and immutably visible on the blockchain forever. Great care must be taken when transmitting the alphanumeric code as any errors do not allow the transaction to be cancelled and cause the loss of the money. It is possible to receive payments more simply by scanning QR codes.
In any case, bitcoins can be transferred through the Internet to anyone with a “bitcoin address”. The peer-to-peer structure of the Bitcoin network and the lack of a central entity makes it impossible for any authority, governmental or otherwise, to block transfers, seize bitcoins without possession of their keys, or devalue them due to the introduction of new currency.
Bitcoin is one of the first implementations of a concept defined as cryptocurrency, first described in 1998 by Wei Dai on a mailing list.
